Smeraldo and Brillante linen yarns produced by Linificio e Canapificio Nazionale were chosen by John Spencer (Textile) Ltd. to weave the fabric of the Anointing Screen used for the King Charles III’s coronation.
The screen is the element that hides the most sacred moment of the ceremony from the eyes of the world. The anointing is historically considered the moment when God and the king join. It is when the Dean of Westminster pours holy oil from the Ampulla into the Coronation Spoon, with which the Bishop of Canterbury anoints the Sovereign on the hands, chest and head.
The Anointing Screen, gifted for the occasion by the City of London Corporation and City Livery Companies, has three sides: the central one features a tree with 56 leaves, one for each member of the Commonwealth, with the king’s cypher positioned at the base, while the design of the two minors is inspired by the floor of Westminster Abbey.
150-year history, innovation and quality are the common threads that made John Spencer (Textile) Ltd. and Linificio e Canapificio Nazionale come together for such an important project. At the same time, the sustainability of Linificio’s yarns meets the ecological demands of the new King.
